![]() The motor in this car is bigger than the motors in most modern pickup trucks or even school buses. Keep in mind the car was designed for comfort, style and power, not fuel economy. The big 455 V8, if driven conservatively, can achieve close to 18 MPG on the long trips. The headliners on these old ones don't seem to sag like the newer (late 1970's-1980's) ones. I used seat covers for most of the car's life to keep them from ripping and tearing, which was pretty common in older cars. The interior is as comfortable as any Buick made today. The air conditioner will frost my windows if I turn it down to low. It doesn't have all the new fancy gadgets but at least I can work on it myself without hooking it to a computer. I know it will be costly, but as I have time I will have it repainted to its original glory. The body is still solid, but the paint is faded. ![]() The car still runs and drives like a cloud, though time has roughed it up just a bit. My car still had close to 300 horses, versus a pitiful 205 in 1976 Electra. I wanted to own a car with character, style, and power. I bought the car in 1975 because of the foolish emission standards the government was forcing on automakers, and they were trying to promote cars like the Chevette and Pinto. The car has never seen snow or salt, and I always try to keep it out of the rain as much as possible. She's big, bold and powerful, dark blue with a black vinyl top and those stunning authentic Buick chrome wheels. Rebuilt differential a few years back due to leaking/contamination. The Centurion is safety designed throughout.Over the years, many minor maintenance issues, mostly due to age and neglect.Ī/C compressor and evaporator, converted to the new freon last year. The oil and amp gauges are unique in that they are not visible until there is danger. This allows for added leg room for the driver. The steering column is located on the centerline of the car and is connected with the wheel at the driver's position by a cantilever arm. The interior trim is a combination of red leather and fiber glass trimmed with bright metal.Ī unique steering column arrangement features a cantilever suspended steering wheel of the aircraft type. ![]() ![]() For rear seat occupants, the front seat back when pushed manually forward, activates a switch which moves the front seat forward and out of the way for easy entrance. For easy entrance into the car, the front seat mechanism is automatically rocked back when the door is opened to allow the driver and the passenger to be seated in the car with the least possible difficulty. The four bucket seats of the Centurion are trimmed in red leather. The wheel discs incorporate air scoops for cooling of the brakes. Fresh air scoops are located in the front fenders. The grille and hood are a solid unit hinging at the front behind the grille and opening at the rear. The front and rear bumpers are an integral part of the shell design. The rear end panel of the car houses a TV camera which in conjunction with a TV viewer on the instrument panel replaces the rear view mirror. When the lights are not in use, the bomb appears to be solid chrome due to thechrome appearance of the outer lenses. The stop and backup lights of the Centurion are located in a bomb in the rear center of the car. A 325-horsepower V8 engine powers the car. The tread is 60 inches both front and rear. The car is 73.5 inches wide, 53.7 inches high, 213.1 inches long and has a wheelbase of 118 inches. The aerodynamically designed Centurion is of fiber glass construction, with the upper body painted red and a brushed metallic finish on the lower portion, separated by a chrome sweepspear. The Centurion, a two-door four-passenger coupe is Buick's 1956 experimental car.
